♥ Background

Pearl Fey was born in the village of Kurain, known for its female spirit mediums and their Kurain Channeling Technique, the ability to call up the spirits of the deceased and speak with them. Little is known about her father except that he left the village when she was young. Her mother, Morgan Fey, was the elder of two sisters. However, Morgan's younger sister, Misty, had much greater spiritual powers, and Misty inherited the title of Master of Kurain instead of Morgan. Feeling cheated, Morgan was left to simmer in resentment about being relegated to the status of a branch family, until Pearl was born. Even from a very young age, Pearl had very strong spiritual power, and Morgan decided that if she herself would never get the Master title, then her precious daughter would. She slowly began to formulate a plan that would eliminate her sister's daughter, Maya Fey, current heir to the Master title, thereby passing the title onto Pearl.

Pearl, however, knew nothing of this plan, and adored her cousin, "Mystic Maya". She was brought up fairly strictly by her mother, and was sheltered from the outside world. She knew very little about it until a man named Turner Grey was murdered in Kurain Village, and Maya was accused of killing him, in a plan concocted by Morgan to get rid of Maya. During this time, she met the lawyer Phoenix Wright, a friend of Maya's who would be defending her in court. While at first she was suspicious of him, he was able to convince her that he was a friend of Maya's, and she quickly befriended him, soon deciding that "Mr. Nick" was Maya's "special someone". In fact, she became a valuable part of the case. During the murder, Pearl had been playing in the hall, and broken Kurain Village's Sacred Urn with her ball. Afraid she would get in trouble, she tried to put it back together, but due to her not-so-great spelling skills, it ended up reading "I AM" instead of "AMI". This important fact, along with her possession of the key to the Channeling Chamber, helped prove Maya's innocence. She was also able to channel Mia Fey, Maya's older sister and Phoenix's mentor in law, to help him out. Morgan Fey's involvement in the murder was exposed, and she was sent to prison, but Pearl still had no idea of her mother's plans, as she was channeling Mia when this was explained.

After Morgan was imprisoned, Pearl tagged along with Phoenix and Maya, coming to the Big Berry Circus in case 2-3 and attending that awesome television hero show banquet thing. However, when Maya was kidnapped, Pearl once again played an important role, channeling Mia for the majority of the time to aid Phoenix once again. The case was finally resolved, and Pearl was happily reunited with her cousin.

Close to a year later, Pearl and Maya went with Phoenix to see an exhibit at the Lordly Tailor department store showcasing objects from their village of Kurain. However, the Sacred Urn, the very same one that Pearl broke back in the Turner Grey murder, was stolen before it was even put on display. Phoenix chose to defend the man believed to be the thief, which upset Pearl, but he got a not guilty verdict as usual and the urn was returned in one piece (though admittedly a little different than how Pearl had put it back together).

Some time later, Pearl and Maya convinced Phoenix to come with them to a place called Hazakura Temple, known for its spiritual training, where Maya was going to take a training course. Soon after their arrival, they met a woman named Elise Deauxnim, a picture book author. Pearl, who was a big fan of her books, was delighted to meet her. After dinner, Elise invited Pearl to her room to read to her. However, Pearl did not come to Elise's room, instead leaving the main temple in order to attempt to execute one of her mother's plans.

During one of her allowed visits with her imprisoned mother, Pearl was told by Morgan to retrieve a letter hidden in their mansion. This letter detailed instructions for Pearl to follow, and was yet another plan to eliminate Maya from the picture. However, Pearl had no idea of her mother's motive, and simply followed her wishes. The plan, in short, was for Pearl to summon the spirit of Morgan's elder daughter, Dahlia, while Pearl and Maya were at Hazakura Temple. Dahlia, possessing Pearl's body, would kill Maya, and her twin sister, Iris, a nun at Hazakura Temple, would be convicted.

The night the plan was to be carried out, Pearl went to check on Maya in the Inner Temple. When she tried to summon Dahlia as per the instructions in the letter at 10 PM, however, she could not, and thought she had lost her powers. She also smeared gravy on a scroll of Misty Fey, misreading her mother's instructions, and when the bridge to the Inner Temple burned down, was stuck on that side of the mountain until it was fixed and she was reunited with Phoenix.

It turned out that Elise Deauxnim was actually Misty Fey, who had been missing for many years, and had come to Hazakura Temple in part of an attempt to try and foil Morgan Fey's plan to get rid of Maya. It's a long and convoluted story, but basically, Elise is the one who summoned Dahlia, which is why Pearl could not, and Maya ends up channeling Dahlia to protect herself from being killed.

Pearl helped Phoenix out once again in court by channeling Mia, who was able to inflame Dahlia's spirit into leaving Maya's body. Eventually, the trial was resolved, and Iris was found not guilty. Pearl felt responsible for Misty Fey's death, but Maya reassured her that it wasn't, saying that if it wasn't for Pearl and the others that helped her, she wouldn't be alive, and that now she is going to be strong for Pearl.

♥ Personality

To strangers or people she doesn't know well, Pearl is shy and reserved, speaking little to them and maintaining a serious face and air. Her mother taught her that if a "suspicious-looking" person tried to talk to her, she should run away, as she does when she first encounters Phoenix.

However, once you get to know her, Pearl's true personality is revealed. She is actually bright and cheerful and cute beyond belief, eager to offer advice or assistance despite her small size. She believes in true love and has a very fairytale-like view of romance, due to the scarcity of men in Kurain Village. She thinks fervently that Phoenix is "Mystic Maya's special someone" and is constantly commenting on the wonderful things he apparently does or should do for Maya. Despite her cute and bubbly personality, she's also quite intelligent and sometimes points out important details that Phoenix overlooks.

Pearl is very devoted to her friends and family, and always springs to defend them immediately if anything bad is said about them. In typical little-kid fashion, she'll often clam up if asked about something she did that she thinks will get her in trouble, and it takes a little coaxing to get an answer out of her. However, she takes great responsibility for her actions and always tries to fix whatever she has done wrong.

At first, she is very sheltered and naive, knowing little of the outside world. She doesn't know what a lawyer is at first, and walks to the court instead of taking the train because she doesn't know what it is, amongst other things. But by the end of the series, she is slightly more well-informed after accompanying Phoenix on several cases. There are still words that confuse her, though, which she tends to repeat after whoever's said it and try to sound them out phonetically. (tik-ket, Mr. Eh-ji-werth...)
